Cali Calmécac principal Christian Vanden Heuvel, 33 and his wife Natasha Eveline Vanden Heuvel, 34 were injured on May 28 when their vehicle was involved in a multi-car accident on Highway 101 at approximately 2:15 p.m.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2006 Honda Accord, driven by Helen Kyung Sook Daniels, 68 of Petaluma, was traveling northbound on US 101, in the fast lane at freeway speeds, when she came upon slower moving traffic. Daniels steered her vehicle to the left in an attempt to avoid a rear-end collision and traveled into the dirt and gravel center median. Once in the center median Daniels counter steered and lost control of her Honda. The Honda traveled into the fast lane where it was struck by a 2003 Chevy mini-van driven by Cindy Green of American Canyon.

After colliding with the Chevy, the Honda continued in a northeasterly direction and entered the slow lane where it struck a big rig, carrying approximately 55,000 lbs of powdered cement. The Big Rig subsequently overturned and collided with the Vanden Heuvel’s Volvo which was in the fast lane of northbound US 101 slowing for traffic. As a result of being struck by the big rig, the Volvo traveled into the center median and collided with the guardrail. The Volvo sustained major damage and ultimately came to rest on top of the guardrail.

Christian Vanden Heuvel, 33 of Windsor, suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to Marin General Hospital where he was treated and released. Natasha Vanden Heuvel suffered major injuries including multiple facial fractures and lacerations. She was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

Kenneth Paul Wade, 29 of Petaluma, who was driving the big rig, suffered moderate injuries and was also taken to Santa Rosa Memorial. The driver of the Honda suffered minor injuries and was transported to Marin General Hospital where she was treated and released. The driver of the Chevy mini van was not transported but complained of pain to her neck and back. Natasha Vanden Heuvel and Wade are currently in stable condition at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

The four vehicle traffic collision on northbound US 101, north of San Antonio Road closed the northbound lanes of US 101 for approximately four hours. The big rig, registered to Minatta Transportation in Cotati, sustained major damage and while it overturned, it did not lose any part of its load as a result of the collision. The Honda sustained major damage and came to rest on its roof blocking the fast lane, while the Chevy sustained moderate damage and remained on its wheels following the collision.

Northbound US 101 traffic was diverted from northbound US 101 at both Hwy 37 and San Antonio Road. Although both southbound lanes of US 101 remained open, traffic in both directions was backed up for 2-3 miles. The road re-opened at approximately 6 p.m.

Chris is not expected to return to work before the end of the school year but Windsor Superintendent Steve Herrington said the school will maintain normal operations as stability helps reassure students. He said additional administrators from the district office will help coordinate graduation services later this week.
