The Healdsburg Girls Softball League has been a major success story this year, as girls aged 8-12 continue to play a full slate of games that are both fun and instructive.

The Healdsburg Parks and Recreation Department was overwhelmed with the response from parents and the number of participants this spring, with some 45 girls filling out four full teams. The pitching is done by a machine, borrowed from the HHS girls softball program. No scores are kept for the games.

The overwhelming response shown by local kids and success of the program has been a pleasant surprise for those involved, including coach and co-organizer Cindy Beth.

"Before this season, girls in Healdsburg only had two options; play Little League with the boys, or go to Windsor to play girls softball,” said Beth. “This is a much-needed program and the girls are having fun and really learning a lot about softball. I am very proud of the girls and their progress. I hope we can develop the program even further with player-pitching and more competition," she added.

Bees vs. Muck Dogs (May 31)

On Saturday, the Bees, coached by Cindy Beth and Susie Cavallo, squared off with the Muck Dogs, led by coach Frank Rea. The Bees took the field first, with strong defensive plays made by Alison Smith at third base, Kristen Beth at first and Avery Roux behind the plate. In their first at-bat, the Bees rallied, with great hitting by Hannah Holden, Rayle Silva and Hailey Roux.

In innings two and three, the Bees were helped defensively by Natalie Ruybal and Amber Osman at Second base, Giselle Saleby at shortstop, Brenley Seanor, Maggie Flores and Autumn Hausman in the outfield. Absent from the game due to illness were Julia Lyon and Simone Saleby.

The Muck Dogs got good offensive production from Adryen Rea, Grace Garzini and Olivia Grande. Playing solid defense for the team were third-baseman Marissa Garzini, catcher Bianca Nicrastro and first-baseman Adrienne McNeil. Making the defensive highlight reel were web gems by Grace Pillinini, Isabella Maxwell, Jasmin Rodriguez, Hannah Mae Cronin and Angelica Sandoval.
