Healdsburg Unified School District Superintendent Jeff Harding is holding a community forum at 6:30 p.m. on April 28 at Healdsburg High School.

The forum, titled “Public Education in Healdsburg-Revitalizing Our Schools,” is intended to hear residents’ thoughts or concerns going forward into the 2009-2010 school year.

“As the new superintendent, I’m interested in establishing more class standards for our schools,” Harding said. “The Healdsburg school district has faced some challenges in the past and I have great confidence that we will overcome those challenges with the support of this community.”

Harding will kick off the forum discussing some of the district’s initiatives this year, as well as acknowledging accomplishments and previewing plans for the future.

The forum will then be opened up to questions or comments from the public. Community members who wish not to speak can leave written comments. Issues brought forward will act as a guide for the Board of Trustees and district administration to focus on at the “2009 Education Summit,” a future event planned that will “bring together community and school leaders to help the Board of Trustees set the agenda for the coming years.” The date of the Education Summit has yet to be determined, Harding said.

The forum on the 28th is designed “to do a quick outline of some of the initiatives (HUSD) has currently,” Harding said, “and, in preparation for the Education Summit, hearing what the interests are and what the vision is for the people who live here.”

“I want to listen to parents and identify gaps in the ideal traditional environment and what we’re currently offering,” Harding said.

“It’s important we generate the vision from our local citizens,” he added.

Harding said he was pleased with the direction education is heading in Healdsburg.

“This is an exciting time for education in Healdsburg,” he said. “The outpouring of support for schools I felt this year inspires me. I’m very pleased.”

Harding said the forum will most likely take place at the Black Box Theater at HHS. The forum was originally scheduled to be held in the band room.
