The 127th commencement ceremony for Cloverdale High School and Johanna Echols Hansen Memorial High School was held on Friday, June 7. Friends and family piled into the CHS football stands to watch their loved ones graduate.
During the ceremony Xenia Echols and Alison Bernal presented the district with the class’ gift — a bench with pink lettering in memory of Vickey Scaramella, who died earlier this year following a 14-year battle with cancer. Scaramella was an avid supporter of the students and district.
“Vickey brightened the lives of many of us who are here today,” they said.
During the ceremony, salutatorian Julie Edwards and valedictorian Eden Winniford both spoke about their high school experiences.
“Usually this would be the part where I say that we’re all going to go on and do great things. But my biggest hope is not that the Cloverdale Class of 2019 does not go on to change the world,” Winniford said. “I only hope that we’re kind to each other, find people we love and work within our fields of passion.”
After receiving their diploma, each graduate was given a sunflower. Family and friends cheered on the graduating class before an eruption of confetti and mortarboards finished out the ceremony.
