Art among the ruins

STILL LIFE — Josephine Halvorson paints a portrait of the rail car in the Burnett St. parking lot in downtown Sebastopol. Halvorson, an artist who lives in Brooklyn, has been painting for about 15 years and spent the Thanksgiving holiday with friends. She’s been coming to Sebastopol since 2002, in order to paint and to enjoy the hospitality of the West County. “Sonoma County has been so good to me,” Halvorson said. “I really like the train because it brings to mind the agricultural past of the area.” A recent blurb in The New Yorker magazine called her work “blunt, the brushwork sensate, and the colors ticklish.” More of Halvorson’s work can be found at - Photo by David Abbott
