Rain forecast for this weekend has prompted sponsors to postpone Guerneville’s annual Stumptown Parade, which was scheduled to roll Saturday, May 18. The parade date has now been moved to Saturday, June 15, said parade organizer Valerie Hausmann.
Postponing the parade “was a hard decision but we had to make it,” Hausmann said Monday. “We had to decide today because there are a lot of people to notify,” including the California Highway Patrol and all the parade entrants, said Hausmann.
Rainfall over the next seven to 10 days could range from 2 inches to 2.5 inches for some North Bay locations, said the National Weather Service forecast on Monday. That much rainfall is “definitely uncommon for mid May,” she said.
When Guerneville’s parade does take place, expect to see some grass skirts, Hawaiian shirts and actual hula dancers in the parade, since theme this year celebrates “the spirit of aloha.”
The aloha theme was picked as an appropriate message in the aftermath of this winter’s Russian River flood, said Hausmann.
“The spirit of aloha is a way of life,” said Hausmann. “It’s the spirit of people coming together as a community, helping each other and showing compassion. This year we wanted throw a party down Main Street with that spirit of aloha.”
The dancers reached out and offered to dance as a way to “bless our community,” said Hausmann, who runs Guerneville’s Center for Sacred Studies. “They said ‘We heard you’re having this [aloha] theme and we want to come.’”
Parade fun on June 15 starts at 11 a.m., followed by an all-day barbecue to benefit the Russian River Firefighters’ Association. The barbecue in the Lark Drugs parking lot runs from noon to 6 p.m.
The 73rd annual parade entry categories include floats, trucks, color guard, novelty, bands, automobiles, drill team, horse and animal division (judged by CSHA Rules) and pooper scooper.
“It’s luau!” said the invite for the parade that traditionally kicks off the lower river’s summer season. The Friends of Stumptown sponsor the event with the help of the Russian River Chamber of Commerce.
