Nationally renowned volleyball coach  Tom Houser (middle) huddled with players during the 2014 Star Camp.  The 2015 Star and High Expectation camps will be held at El Molino High School beginning on July 6.

Camps will be led by highly regarded coach Tom Houser

Forestville will serve as volleyball central beginning on July 6, when renowned coach and author Tom Houser brings his innovative style to El Molino High School in the annual Star and High Expectations volleyball camps.

Houser, author of the “I Can't Wait” to coach books, and Drill Collection, is a nationally traveled youth coach based in Virginia. This year’ he’ll be assisted by coach and current Averett University star Katey Holley, Ferrum College coach Jessica Flanagan, and veteran Hillcrest Junior High School coach Sharon Lochert.

Each camp will strongly encourage repetition and improvement, with a point system used in drills to further development.  When the amount of points needed to advance isn't reached during a drill, it is repeated until it is mastered.

Star Camp

The Star Camp, open to girls of all levels in incoming sixth - ninth grades, will take place from July 6-8 with a cost of $285 per camper.

Players will be evaluated at the beginning of camp before being split into three divisions (A-C) based on skill and experience, but may be moved based on the overall skill level of each division.

Drills will begin with effective stretching exercises and will feature all facets of the game include passing, hitting, setting, serving, blocking, and serve receive. If time permits, an end of camp tournament will be held to show fans what players have learned.  Campers often are more committed to give 100-percent effort so as not to remain in the same drill.

High Expectations Camp

A High Expectations Camp will be conducted on July 10-12 by the same coaching staff, welcoming all players in incoming eighth -12th grades with at least three seasons of competitive team play.

This camp is limited to 48 players and will cost $350 per week, focusing on advanced passing, serving, digging, spiking, setting, offense, and defense. Bonus points will be given during all drills when players execute just-learned skills.

A $75 discount will be given to players who enroll in both camps and a $10 referral credit will be given for each additional child referred.

Lochert making progress

It’s been a trying year for Hillcrest Junior High coach Sharon Lochert, who has shown tremendous character and resolve while undergoing surgery and extensive treatment for cancer. Through it all she has continued to coach the 6th-8th grade volleyball teams, often while battling the ill-effects of chemotherapy.

“I guess I didn’t really understand what the after-effects of the chemo would be like,” Lochert said recently. “It hasn’t been a walk-in-the-park, but fortunately I have an amazing medical team, group of friends, and husband that have lifted me up through this entire process. It’s been the blessing to be able to coach all three of my teams during this time that has probably been one of the biggest contributors to my moving forward,” she added.

Lochert will continue to receive treatment this month before undergoing one more surgery in July.
